NSK Lecture in Berlin, 01.10.10

Congress month opens with my lecture on NSK and the Congress at the workshop Andere Europas (Other Europes). The event is free and will take place in both English and German.

Andere Europas: Soziale Imagination in transnationalen Bewegungen und urbanen Öffentlichkeiten

Das Projekt stellt die Frage nach Anderen Europas in doppelter Hinsicht: einmal als Frage danach, ob, wo und durch wen andere als die herrschenden Visionen Europas vorstellbar und öffentlich kommunizierbar werden; zum anderen die Frage danach, ob und wie in solchen alternativen Imaginationen die Anderen Europas - im Sinne der in den herrschenden Visionen Ausgeschlossenen oder jedenfalls Marginalisierten (Migrant/innen, soziale/kulturelle Minoritäten, Kritiker/innen des Neuen Europas) - eine besondere Rolle als Adressat/innen, als Produzent/innen spielen. Damit wird zugleich die Frage neu aufgeworfen, inwieweit Europa als Raum sozialer, politischer Utopien und für die Mobilisierung transnationaler, urbaner Öffentlichkeiten (noch) attraktiv ist. Im Blick stehen dabei besonders Akteure und Produktionen an den Schnittstellen von subkulturellen und migrantischen Praktiken, Kunst, Kulturproduktion, Wissenschaft und politischem Aktivismus.

Ein erster empirischer Ansatzpunkt des Projekts wird der von der slowenischen Künstlergruppe IRWIN/Neue Slowenische Kunst (NSK) organisierte Kongress mit Bürger/innen des virtuellen Staats "NSK State in Time" sein, der vom 21. bis 23. Oktober 2010 in Berlin, im Haus der Kulturen der Welt, stattfindet. Vgl. dazu: http://www.congress.nskstate.com/

Von hier aus wird das Projekt weiteren, vergleichbaren Initiativen nachgehen, die im städtischen Raum Berlins sichtbar werden und auf ihren imaginären Bezug zu Europa befragt werden können.

Der Kick off-Workshop am 1. Oktober 2010 wird Expert/innen der relevanten Themenfelder, Forscher/innen und Interessierte zu einer gemeinsamen Erkundung & Diskussion des Projektthemas zusammen bringen.

4th Annual Mark Fisher Memorial Lecture 2021 recording

Thanks to all who watched the event on Friday, we all enjoyed it and were really pleased with the response, we were only sorry not to have more time for questions and discussion. Ludmilla Andrews did a great job of executing the film at great speed in lockdown conditions. My commentary for the film was written in haste over the New Year and recorded in the following week. It's a snapshot of the transition from 2020 to 2021 through the prism of Test Dept's work and Fisher's response to it.

Doctor Who and the Death Factory at Noise=Noise, June 8th.

Next Friday I'll give an experimental presentation at Noise=Noise on the strange parallels between the sonic and conceptual dystopianism of Doctor Who and first generation British industrial music. Dr. Who exposed mass audiences (often very young) to a combination of experimental electronic sound and dystopian themes, a combination that could also summarise industrial music. Dr. Who frequently presented post-apocalyptic scenarios of mutation, mind control and para-militarised societies and, in the process, at least implicitly criticised actual political and technological developments of the time, particularly those associated with the Cold War arms race. Due to budgetary constraints these visionary scenarios were often realised in a rudimentary ad hoc fashion; an approach that also applies to industrial. People's March Against Neofeudalism

Last Saturday I join a pan-European group of friends and c. 700, 000 others on the People's March. As I explained to a Japanese journalist, we were there as we felt we had no choice. I have the sense that many in the country feel that if they just keep their heads down and give the Brexit People what they want, then they'll be satisfied. This is a huge mistake. The elite mob of disaster capitalists, neofeudalists and kleptocrats may not be unstoppable, but they are absolutely insatiable. Ultimately, nothing will satisfy their lust for blood and power, so it is better to make a stand now while it's still possible than to have to wrest back control from them amidst the Hard Brexit chaos they dream of.
