20th Anniversary of Krst pod Triglavom

On February 6th 1986 the NSK production Krst pod Triglavom (Baptism under Triglav) premiered at Cankarjev Dom, Ljubljana. The production was the ultimate expression of NSK as Gesamtkunstwerk and signalled the partial embrace of NSK (if not yet Laibach) by the Slovene cultural establishment.

As it was only ever performed in Ljubljana and in Belgrade (at the BITEF festival that autumn) it is one of the most obscure and legendary NSK works, known of by many but seen by only a lucky few. Those who were not there at the time have to reconstruct it from photos in the Neue Slowenische Kunst monograph (1992) and from Laibach's lavishly illustrated soundtrack album. With a range of obscure references to Slovene cultural and historical material plus a ritualistic atmosphere, Krst remains mysterious, even with a knowledge of its contradictory sources (from Slovene paganism to the international avant-garde).

Tomorrow there will be a rare chance to watch a 15 min video excerpt of the production. This will be the first of a series of online broadcasts featuring highlights of Slovene performance arts:

4th Annual Mark Fisher Memorial Lecture 2021 recording

Thanks to all who watched the event on Friday, we all enjoyed it and were really pleased with the response, we were only sorry not to have more time for questions and discussion. Ludmilla Andrews did a great job of executing the film at great speed in lockdown conditions. My commentary for the film was written in haste over the New Year and recorded in the following week. It's a snapshot of the transition from 2020 to 2021 through the prism of Test Dept's work and Fisher's response to it.

J.M. Bowers - Edison's Residue

J.M. Bowers is a well respected sound/noise producer who gave a very memorable performance at the Noise=Noise event at The Foundry last autumn. I have just discovered this intriguing free release for download. The source is a heavily rendered recording of Edison's famous 'Mary had little lamb' test recording. The result is a very tactile audio landscape, full of rich and uncanny detail. Recommended.

Pluralni monolit, 2003-2013.

Pluralni Monolit/WAT launch event, Vila Bled, 07.09.2003 The first edition of my book on Laibach and NSK was launched exactly 10 years ago to the day at Vila Bled, Slovenia, in a hall used by Tito for diplomatic receptions. This is an edited version of my presentation at the launch events in Bled and Ljubljana... This all began twenty-three years ago in Trbovlje when posters briefly appeared with a black cross and the word “Laibach”. No-one then could have imagined we would be here today, presenting this , but in the end time always catches up with itself. What would the former resident of this place have made of this gathering and his place on the cover of the book? Perhaps the situation seems even stranger because this book is not by a Slovene author. What right does a foreign author have to come here and present your history? The same right that Laibach and NSK had to respond to the cultures and symbols that intruded on their space. These artists took for themselves a rig...
